(In case you lose interest in doing some of these tests I wanted to put this out to you that Phoenix Piano Moving does offer piano buying consultions that could be as low as $60 and could save hundreds and maybe save you from buying a money pit piano)

I touched on this a little on the article about “What to look for when buying a entry level piano”, but I wanted to cover this a little more extensive here. First, what is a money pit piano or a lemon piano? In my definition this would be a piano that costs you 3 times as much to have it ready to play and enjoy after you pay for moving, tuning and any other recovery and repairs that would be necessary before it can be enjoyed. So the biggest example of that would be the cracked sound board that affects the piano from holding a tune. This could cost you $200-$400 just to take tension off all 230 strings then applying a patch to the board so that the board does not slip when tension is applied again. This is usually a walk away senerio but if you really like the piano’s outside looks and I’m sure it will be greatly discounted if not free then maybe that is the route for you. But if you don’t want such a project and you just want a piano that your kids can learn to play on then I’ll include some simple tests to avoid buying a money pit pianos.

You have to do a little investigation on the piano asking questions like when was it last tuned last, then take a simple tuning app like “datuner” and see how many cents the piano is flat. If the person tells you its been tuned every year and then you find out that its 30 cents flat that tells us one of two things, either the person “has been less then honest with us or the piano has some serious problems, which is it?” A piano in good mechanical shape should not go more then 10 cents flat over the year. Next, examine the hammers looking for repair work that might have been done and specifically look also at the groves that are formed by the hammer hitting the strings. If the groves are deep then this means that the sound will be effected as well and future recovery work on the hammers will cost about $60-$100. Next, hit the left pedal and watch the hammers go up and return. All the hammers should return at the same rate of speed without sluggish stalls. If some of the hammers are slow then the action is due for servicing, this could be another $60-100 to clean, lubricate necessary pivots and tightening 230 plus action screws. Finally and not necessary in this order, but strike every key from left to right, with your tuning app if possible, and listening for the harmony and disharmony of the strings. The app may show that the low side is little more flat then the high side (right side) but it should be fairly close to the same cent or % flat. This simple test will help insure that you haven’t bought a lemon of piano. If there is some unevenness across the keys say greater then 50% then I would be concerned that there has been a string broke recently or worst there might be crack in the frame leding to it not wanted to hold a tune. If a string has broke, no big deal, it can be replaced sometimes as low as $25 but it’s a crack that is causing it to loose tune then maybe its best to walk away. Not all cracks will cause a piano to not hold a tune, actually maybe only 10% of cracks are in such a way that the tune is affected. The cracks can be repaired but this can be a costly expense, maybe in the $200-$400 range so make sure you ask for that discount. Actually, I would perform all this test and observations and then ask the seller to help you out with these expenses. Maybe they will discount completely or go half and half. If its a $500 piano and all these things are true except for the cracked sound board then maybe they will take $300 knowing that you have $160 plus moving expense and if its more then 10% flat, which 95% of the used piano are, then there is a $200 tuning expense, maybe the seller will give you a little break on the price. If they feel offended by all the tests and downgrading, then you can decide if the outward appearance of the piano is worth the risk of buying and hoping for the best.

Like I mentioned above, we do offer a piano buying consultation which will help you in your buying experience and in most cases the buyer saves hundreds after we go through all the expenses the piano will need to get it ready to be enjoyed and ask the seller if they will be willing to meet us half way with some of the expenses. If you buy the piano and it can be moved on the same visit then the consultation cost could be waved for this service and then the moving cost will depend on the situation.

(I’ll state this briefly now more at the end, Phoenix Piano Moving does offer piano consultation which in some cases saves the buyer hundreds of dollars and possibly from the worst case of buying a money pit piano.)

There are many consideration when looking for an entry level piano. I will talk about a few of them. Maybe you would like to get a starter piano for you kids to start learning piano. You want something that will give them the feel and sound of a “real” piano but don’t want to spend too much money in case they lose interest and don’t appear to show aptitude. Well, expect to pay somewhere between $500-$700 to make such experience possible. By the time you buy what looks to be a good piano at $350, have it moved for $100 and have it tuned and adjusted for $200 your looking at $650. When buying an older piano keep in mind that it probably has been sitting for a few years with little to no use and probably hasn’t been tuned in at least 3 years. This is the average situation for a $350 piano. If you pay $750, expect to have the tuned every year and to be excellent shape. You would still have $100 moving expense and maybe $80 fine tune one week after the piano acclimates in its new location but you will at least not have to worry about the way the piano performs and feels. There are many reasons for such recovery costs but basically the years of negligent have taken a toll on the piano and it can’t be recovered too quickly but the strings must be stretched slowly requiring sometime two tunes one week apart and some voicing on the hammers so that they return to their original softness.

I would still encourage looking for that $200-$400 piano and then having it moved and recovery work done for this could save you hundreds overall but I want you to know what you are getting into and the costs associated. I think most people will look for a piano that matches their furniture and decor and then how it sounds is a close secondary. I don’t think there is anything wrong with this plan for the insides of the piano can most likely be recovered a lot cheaper then the outside in most cases, but you also don’t want to buy a money pit piano. You have to do a little investigation on the piano asking questions like when was it last tuned, then take a simple tuning app like “datuner” and see how many cents the piano is flat. If there is some unevenness accoss the keys say greater then 50% then I would be concerned that there has been a string broke recently or worst there might be crack in the frame leding to it not wanted to hold a tune. If its a $500 piano and all these things are true except for the cracked sound board then maybe they will take $300 knowing that you have $100 moving expense and if its more then 10% flat, which 95% of the used piano are, then there is a $200 tuning expense, maybe the seller will give you a little break on the price. If they feel offended by all the tests and downgrading, then you can decide if the outward appearance of the piano is worth the risk of buying and hoping the best.

Now if you would prefer that a professional technician come examine your potential piano before buying then we can certainly arrange that. The cost is general $60 for a thorough inspection and consultation, then we can briefly talk out of the seller presence to see how you would like to pursue negotiations or walking away. If you buy the piano and would like to have us move it on the same visit then we can absorb $40 of the consultation fee into the moving cost, so you will only pay $20 for consulting and then the low moving fee based on the situation could be anywhere from $100 on up.

Every persons situation is just a little different but we are glad to offer you a full piano storage solution. Whether you are moving from one house to another and need a temporary storage solution or your having your floors replaced and you are needing to protect your piano during the process we can certainly help. Generally the cost of storage can range from $75 a month for an upright in climate control or $100 a month for a grand piano in the climate controlled room. The price for bringing your piano to the storage and delivery back to its new location are billed separately and can be paid upon pick up and delivery. There are many factors that go into such a quote but the price could range from $100 for uprights to starting at $160 for baby grands. Now for grand pianos that are less then 20years old it is no problem to store the piano for many months on its side but for older pianos or for longer lengths of time it is recommended that we tighten all the internal actions screws, about 200 screws soon after we delivery the piano so that the gravity on the hammers does not cause misalignment. Other services can be done at this time which at other times would cost you a lot more if one of our technicians would have come to your place like replacing the key tops or staining the piano. Also, it is possible that we could help you sell your piano in our showroom if you are not able to take it with you to your new location. Often times we can help you sell the piano very quickly and for more then you would normally get when we add tuning and delivery services to the package. Please call, text or fill out our quote form to get the best rate today.

For example if you have a U-Haul truck or trailer it might be less expensive for us to provide a piano board, blankets and straps for $140 and then we professionally wrap and load your piano into the truck for you it could be as low as $250 for everything needed depending on distance from our North Phoenix shop.

1. Will my piano leave the city and possibly have humidity changes? This may require preparations and adjustments to be made two weeks after the piano is moved.

2. If its a grand piano will the piano be sitting on its side for a prolonged period of time or will it be assembled on delivery? If the piano is stored for more then a day on its side sometimes the hammer alignment can be adversely affected and require adjustments when being tuned.

3. Are there stairs involved in your move? This always adds a cost both in moving and possibly future tunes if not moved correctly.

4. Will my final destination have hardwood or carpet? Especially for heavy uprights and grand pianos its important to always have the piano movers to install the piano cups which will properly displace the weight of the piano and save future damage to your flooring.

5. Does your mover have experience with your particular situation and piano. Always check reviews, videos and ask lots of questions so that your very comfortable with the process.

This should get you thinking in the right direction. For further questions please text or call me, Daniel 623-282-1411.

Piano tuning is not something that you pick up over night. It is a skill that takes considerable time and practice to do well, and above all it takes patience. It is impossible to perform so delicate a task if you are the sort of person who insists on rushing and doing everything as quickly as possible. Although it is not something you will learn in a day, with time and effort you can become an excellent piano tuner.

It is perfectly possible to learn to tune your own piano, but you will need to be sure of a few things before you start. Remember that the strings in a piano are tuned extremely tightly, and as a result, there is tremendous force inside the piano. Inexpertly attempting to fiddle with the piano tuning can cause severe damage. It is even possible to injure yourself.

You will need only a few tools to get started. A special wrench is used for tuning pianos. This is often called a hammer, and is intended specifically for moving piano pins. Some dampers are useful, often made from felt and rubber. Some sort of pitch reference will be necessary – either an electronic device or an old-fashioned tuning fork can work. Some safety glasses are a vital accessory – piano strings can break, and you do not want to lose an eye.

Both grand pianos and upright pianos have similar basic designs. The main difference is the orientation of the strings. As a result, each is tuned in a similar way. It tends to be the case that any piano needs to have all of its strings tuned at least once a year, and preferably each season. Sometimes only, a few notes will appear to be out of tune upon first listen, but usually the entire piano will fall out of tune to some extent with time. This means that piano tuning is never a small job – each and every string will need to be tuned in one day, which takes a great deal of work and, as we have said before, patience.

The actual method of piano tuning is complex and requires study, or at the very least a natural ear. It is well worth enlisting a professional piano technician if the job is too complex for you. There are safety issues to be considered as well as tuning ones – if your piano has gone a long time without tuning, it may have developed some structural fault that needs attention. A skilled piano tuner will know when this is so.

Phoenix Piano is committed to providing excellent service. We know how important your piano is to you, so when you trust it to our care, we do not take that responsibility lightly. We stand behind our work, and we don’t consider the job finished unless you are completely satisfied with the results.
